چکیده

We report on the identification and tracking of the electrical activity of processes of single neurons. With a newly designed complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) based integrated highdensity microelectrode array (HD-MEA) [1,2], we were able to simultaneously use more than 1000 electrodes and low-noise readout channels to monitor electrophysiological signals of many individual branches of a single axonal arbor of a specific neuron.

High-density microelectrode array recordings and real-time spike sorting for closed-loop experiments: an emerging technology to study neural plasticity

Understanding plasticity of neural networks is a key to comprehending their development and function. A powerful technique to study neural plasticity includes recording and control of pre- and post-synaptic neural activity, e.g., by using simultaneous intracellular recording and stimulation of several neurons. Intracellular recording is, however, a demanding technique and has its limitations in...

Challenges and opportunities for large-scale electrophysiology with Neuropixels probes

Electrophysiological methods are the gold standard in neuroscience because they reveal the activity of individual neurons at high temporal resolution and in arbitrary brain locations. Microelectrode arrays based on complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, such as Neuropixels probes, look set to transform these methods. Neuropixels probes provide ∼1000 recording sites on an ext...

Amplitude modulation based readout for very dense active microelectrode arrays

A readout method which is suitable for high-density active microelectrode arrays used in electrophysiology experiments is presented. Amplitude modulation of consecutive channels enables simultaneous recording and transmission of the signals recorded on multiple electrodes, using a single amplifier. The physical limitation of the readout method is demonstrated to relate to the summation of the t...

Recording Large Extracellular Spikes in Microchannels along Many Axonal Sites from Individual Neurons

The numerous connections between neuronal cell bodies, made by their dendrites and axons, are vital for information processing in the brain. While dendrites and synapses have been extensively studied, axons have remained elusive to a large extent. We present a novel platform to study axonal physiology and information processing based on combining an 11,011-electrode high-density complementary m...

Multi-electrode arrays technology for the non-invasive recording of neural signals: a review article

The recording of electrophysiological activities of brain neurons in the last half-century has been considered as one of the effective tools for the development of neuroscience. One of the techniques for recording the activity of nerve cells is the multi-electrode arrays (MEAs). Microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are usually employed to record electrical signals from electrogenic cells like neurons o...
